Drone Data Handoff for GIS, CAD & BIM Teams in Bangalore

How engineering and design teams can specify coordinate systems, file formats, quality checks, metadata and acceptance criteria for drone data.

A drone survey is only useful when the receiving team can open, interpret and trust the delivered files. GIS, CAD and BIM teams should define the data handoff before capture so the project is designed around the downstream workflow rather than a generic “3D model” request.

Specify the coordinate and reference system

State the coordinate reference system, vertical datum, units, geoid model where relevant, survey control, origin, project grid and required transformation. An attractive model with an unclear coordinate reference can be difficult to use operationally.

Define the output package

Possible outputs include orthomosaic GeoTIFF, DSM, DTM, point cloud LAS/LAZ, textured mesh OBJ/FBX, contours DXF/SHP, KML/KMZ, report PDF, CSV volume table, thumbnails and metadata. Only request the formats the team can use and review.

Quality and acceptance

Define GSD, overlap, control/check points, expected accuracy, coverage, missing areas, processing notes, known limitations, file naming and acceptance reviewer. The correct standard depends on the project and should be agreed before the flight.

Versioning and storage

Use a project folder structure with date, site, processing version, coordinate system, source media, deliverables and QA notes. Large point clouds and imagery need a delivery method, retention period and access plan.

FAQs

What file formats can a drone survey deliver?

Depending on the scope, outputs may include GeoTIFF, LAS/LAZ, OBJ/FBX, DXF/SHP, KML/KMZ, CSV and PDF reports. The actual package should be agreed before capture.

Does a point cloud automatically work in BIM?

No. It may require classification, cleaning, coordinate alignment and downstream modelling by the receiving team.

Should a GIS team provide its coordinate system?

Yes. The coordinate reference, vertical datum, units and acceptance criteria should be known before mission planning.

Can SkyViews provide raw photos as well as processed data?

Raw media and processed outputs can be listed separately in the project scope, subject to storage and delivery requirements.
