Drone Photo Metadata and Geotagging

A practical guide to capture metadata, filenames, location information, timestamps, privacy and reliable photo handover.

Aerial photographs become much more useful when a client can identify when, where and how each image was captured. Metadata and geotagging can support property records, inspections, construction reporting, GIS and archival search, but they should be checked rather than assumed to be perfect after export or editing.

Separate capture from edited files

Keep original camera files separate from colour-graded, cropped, resized or annotated exports. Editing software may remove, alter or rewrite metadata. The handover should make clear which files retain original capture information and which are presentation copies.

Agree the location standard

Specify whether the client needs embedded GPS, a separate CSV, a GIS layer, asset IDs, chainage, map pins or a project coordinate system. Consumer GPS tags and survey control are not interchangeable; the required precision should match the decision.

Use a consistent naming system

Include project, date, site, asset or shot ID and version where useful. Avoid putting sensitive personal information into filenames. A separate index can store descriptions, coordinates, capture notes, privacy status and approved usage.

Review privacy and sharing

Location data can reveal private homes, security-sensitive facilities or operational details. Decide what is embedded, who can download it, which files can be published and whether public exports need metadata removal or redaction.
