Drone Insurance & Liability for Commercial Shoots in India

What clients and drone operators should clarify about insurance, site risk, third-party exposure, equipment damage, privacy and contract respo...

Insurance is only one part of a safe commercial drone operation. A client should understand what the operator's policy covers, what it excludes, and which responsibilities remain with the site owner, event organiser or production company. Policy terms vary, so this article is an operational checklist rather than legal or insurance advice.

Questions to clarify before the shoot

Site-owner responsibilities still matter

Insurance does not make an unsafe flight acceptable. The site owner should identify hazards, restrict access where needed, coordinate security and provide accurate information about workers, visitors, power, traffic, cranes, sensitive areas and emergency procedures.

Privacy and content liability are separate

Liability for a flight is different from permission to film or publish people, private property, logos, confidential processes or sensitive infrastructure. The production contract should define access, consent, usage rights, storage and publication responsibilities.

What a responsible proposal should state

The proposal should identify the intended operation, crew, equipment, location, deliverables, permissions, safety dependencies, insurance documentation available on request, rescheduling terms and client responsibilities. It should not imply that insurance guarantees permission or eliminates every risk.

FAQs

Does insurance guarantee a flight can happen?

No. Airspace, safety, site access, weather and applicable permissions still need to be confirmed.

Should a commercial client ask for insurance proof?

Yes, when the project risk or procurement process requires it. The operator should provide documentation appropriate to the assignment and policy terms.

Does insurance cover privacy or copyright disputes?

Not automatically. Flight liability, equipment damage, privacy, intellectual property and publication rights are separate issues that should be addressed contractually.

Are event and industrial shoots treated differently?

They can be. People, hazards, equipment, access, site rules and policy conditions may differ, so the operation should be scoped specifically.
