Drone Footage Licensing and Usage Rights in India

A practical guide to agreeing where, how long and by whom drone photos, video, raw footage and edited films may be used.

A drone quote should explain more than the flight and edit. Clients should know what media they receive, which uses are included, whether third-party music or talent rights apply, and what happens if the campaign expands later. This is a planning guide, not legal advice; the signed agreement controls the project.

Separate the deliverables

List selected stills, edited film, social cutdowns, raw camera files, log footage, project files, panoramas, 360 assets and mapping outputs separately. “All footage” can mean different things to different teams, so define the folder, format, resolution and selection process.

Define channels and duration

State whether the licence covers the client's website, social channels, paid advertising, print, outdoor, broadcast, internal presentations, property portals or partner use. Include the territory and term if those limits matter. A local property listing and a national advertising campaign are different uses.

Identify third-party rights

Music, voice-over, people, private property, logos, artwork, locations and client-supplied material may have separate rights. The production brief should identify who is responsible for obtaining each approval and whether the supplied music is licensed for paid media.

Raw footage and archive expectations

If raw or log footage is required, agree whether it is supplied immediately, after the edit, or only as an additional archive handover. Confirm storage duration, download window, backup responsibility and whether project files are included. A finished film does not automatically include every source file.

Changes after delivery

Define the review rounds, correction window, new-format exports and major re-edit process. A request to create a new campaign film months later may be a new post-production scope rather than a minor revision.

For a quote, use the client booking checklist, then state intended use in the contact form.

FAQs

Do clients automatically own all drone footage?

Not necessarily. Ownership, licence and source-media delivery depend on the written agreement and any third-party rights.

Should paid advertising be mentioned before the shoot?

Yes. Paid media, broadcast, print and partner use can affect the required licence and third-party clearances.

Is raw footage always included?

No. Raw or log files should be requested and priced as a defined deliverable with an agreed handover and archive process.
